Can Music Make Your Child Smarter?
For many years people have been under the impression that music improves the development of children’s minds. Parents enroll their children in music programs at ages as early as 3 hoping they find a hobby their kids will like and stick with forever. Music classes are also mandatory in grammar school and often times junior high. According to research in Canada children involved in music lessons had a better attention span than children who weren’t. This has been attributed to the fact that children have billions of neurons which connect better in children with music talents.
A stimulus given off by music; Buckethead and Bassnectar in particular are different than stimuli given off by any other subjects. Increased attention span means that children will perform better overall in many different classes in school. Instead of watching the clock the children with musical training will have the attention span to focus on what their teachers are saying. Also the study of music can be related to better study skills which leads to better test performance. Music such as jam band music that changes tempo often is found to help keep a person’s attention span better than music that is repetitive.
